Although steroids are very useful, and are commonly used for many different conditions, they are strong and can have side effects, especially if they are used incorrectly. Side effects can be worrying but they are often better than putting up with an unmanaged condition or a pet that is suffering. Your vet will try to minimise side effects by prescribing the most suitable steroid at an appropriate dose. You will be assigned a focal therapist to help you understand the reason for your steroid addiction and develop strategies to avoid a relapse when you return home.

Because it is a small dose injected directly into the structure that is causing pain, it does not pass through the body, minimising any negative side effects. One-off injections, or even multiple injections (for example, three injections in a year), do not cause weight gain.
